Professional Headshot Tips
What is the very first thing you look at when you look up someone on the internet? We can all try to say we don't judge a book by its cover, but I would bet its their profile picture. This is especially true in this digital age where consumers find most of their information about businesses on the internet. If you are a professional, you want to make sure that your headshot images are just that, professional. Your Professional Headshots reflect you, your business, how you do business and what you stand for. They are as much a part of your branding as your logo. Your Professional Headshot is key for setting the stage for building trust. I have put together a list of 5 things to help you prepare for your upcoming session.
1. Choose a photographer that is skilled in lighting and posing. Just as you are a professional in your field, you need to make sure you are in the hands of a professional photographer. You want to put your best face forward and the skill of your photographer will make a difference. Professional photography comes with an extra cost, but just remember, you are paying for that photographer's education and experience. The extra cost now will benefit you and your business in the long run.
2. Wear clothing that suits your brand. If you wear a suit and tie everyday then suit up! But if you are more of a creative type of person, then by all means skip it and go with something that betters suits YOU! This portrait not only reflects you but your brand so let's focus on consistent branding. If you have specific colors you use then let's incorporate them in the wardrobe. I suggest to everyone to bring a few options to their sessions to get the most selection out of their images. Please iron or steam your wardrobe before the session.
3. Let's talk grooming. Do not alter your appearance drastically right before or after your portrait session. If you are planning to cut/color your hair into a completely different style, you may want to reconsider. Or at least give yourself time to adjust to your new look before scheduling portraits. The same goes for facial hair guys. Don't shave that fantastic beard if you've had it for two years. But if facial hair is not your thing, please do come freshly shaved.
4. Personality! This is the first time your client is meeting you so let's make it count. How do you want to come across to your clients; serious, easy-going, fun, down to earth, all business or a mixture? I can help you decide when you arrive for your session and we will come up with the perfect combination to reflect YOU. Its always good to practice in front of a mirror before your session. And yes, you may feel silly, but I promise it will help. Try out a smile, a big smile, a little smile and a serious face. Ask friends and associates what they think best suits you and if all else fails, google professional headshot images and bring along some inspiration images.
5. Relax! It doesn't hurt, I promise. From the moment you walk into the studio I want you to feel at home. Most of my headshot sessions are complete within 45 minutes. The part of the session that takes time is deciding which images YOU want to keep. Clients are amazed at how many great images I can capture of them in such a short amount of time. After the session, you will come to the viewing area of the studio and I will assist you in selecting your images from the 60" screen. Your images will then be retouched and delivered to you.
